Description

The earliest drumming traditions started on the continent of Africa. However, the drum kit itself is an American invention. During the 1840s, drummers in marching bands, as well as musical theatre companies in Europe and America, would use a variety of individual hand percussion instruments. In order to cover more roles, by about the 1860s, bands started to experiment with multiple percussion instruments, combining them into what was then known as a trap set. A basic modern drum set typically consists of four to six drums: snare drum, bass drum, and two to four tom-toms. The kit also includes a ride cymbal, a hi-hat cymbal pair, and a couple of crash cymbals. Each of these pieces has a history of its own.

In 1909, William Ludwig invented the bass drum pedal. This is a chain-action accessory that allows the musician to hit the center of the membrane with a stick without being awkwardly positioned. In 1935 Gene Krupa changed the face of drumming by using what was referred to as a “Stripped Down Kit”. Designed by the Slingerland Company Krupa’s kit was a standard four piece and included tom-toms with tuneable heads both top and bottom. Tuneable toms took the world by storm, and so too did Krupa’s new streamlined kit.
